Bigger Gifts to Charity Are Up, but Smaller Gifts Are Down

Larger gifts to charity are up while smaller gifts are down, as is retention of new donors, according to updated research from the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

AFP recently released the 2018 fourth-quarter update to its Fundraising Effectiveness Project, which tracks fundraising on a quarterly basis.

The study found that charitable gifts of more than $1,000 were up 2.6% in 2018 over 2017. But smaller gifts were down: Gifts between $250 and $999 were down 4%, while gifts under $250 were down 4.4%. That supports other research which has found fewer donors making larger gifts. That trend for annual giving could have an effect on planned giving as well.

2018 Charitable Gifts Change from 2017, by Gift Amount

Retention of new donors dropped to 20.2% in 2018, down from 24.4% in 2017, the biggest fluctuation in the past five years.

Overall, charitable contributions were up slightly in 2018 without adjusting for inflation, according to the study.
