Pentera Webinar Offers Ideas for Engaging and Retaining First-Generation Philanthropists

Pentera client Florida International University is redefining charitable giving with an exciting new program aimed at recent graduates, first-generation donors, and individuals with mid-level giving capacity.

The program, called Pathway to Philanthropist (P2P), was developed at FIU in response to a surge in young alumni excited about giving back to the university. The program seeks to harness that enthusiasm by offering a three-part donor package that combines immediate impact contributions, endowment funding, and a planned gift. It was explained during a free Pentera webinar on April 13 by FIU's Laura Padron, associate vice president of development, and Livia Souza, associate director of estate and planned giving.

To attract mid-level donors, P2P eases requirements for establishing named endowments and operating accounts while removing minimum age restrictions on gifts of irrevocable life insurance. The program has already attracted several recent alumni, in many cases first-generation graduates who have named endowments and scholarships in honor of the parents or grandparents who sacrificed to allow them to attend FIU.

As with FIU's inclusive approach to education, P2P is "empowering a diverse, nontraditional major-gifts donor group to have a voice and seat at the table," Souza explains. "We want our alumni to not just leave their legacy at FIU, we want them to live it."

Pentera is the nation's leader in planned giving marketing, serving charities, hospitals, and educational institutions across the United States. Its free webinar series provides valuable insights from leading members of the planned giving community.
