Planned Giving Revenue Up in First Half of the Year

More than 80% of charities say that planned giving revenue in the first half of 2017 was as good as or better than last year, according to a recently released study by the Nonprofit Research Collaborative.

The Summer 2017 Nonprofit Fundraising Survey collected information from 1,100 U.S. and Canadian charities about all types of nonprofit fundraising in the first half of the year; a similar survey is conducted at the end of the year.

In the survey, planned gifts were divided into two categories: bequests received and planned gift commitments. The findings include:

  • Eighty percent of charities say that bequest revenue received in the first half of 2017 equals or exceeds last year.
  • Eighty-four percent of charities say that planned gift commitments received in the first half of 2017 equal or exceed last year.

The chart below shows the percent of charities who said planned giving revenue is either down, about the same, or up.

While a significant percentage of charities are saying that planned giving revenue is up, those numbers are not as good as in the recent past, according to the study. In 2015, for instance, 47% of charities said bequests received were up vs. 39% this year.

The study found that 61% of the charities promote planned giving. The human services sector led the way, with 78% of those charities promoting planned giving.
