Women in Fundraising Make 10% Less Than Men Due to Gender Pay Gap

Female fundraisers make 10.5% less than their male counterparts because of a gender pay gap, according to a new study from the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

The 95-page study published earlier this year is titled "The Impact of Gender on Fundraising Salaries 2014-2018." The AFP received responses to its survey from more than 10,000 fundraisers during the four-year period. There was no breakdown of the type of fundraising, so planned giving fundraising could not be looked at separately.

The study found several factors besides gender that contribute significantly to the pay disparity between men and women - including that male fundraisers tend to have more education, work at larger nonprofits with bigger budgets that pay more, are more likely to have high-level positions, and are less likely to take time off to care for children. But the study also concluded that gender itself is still a significant factor in the pay disparity.

"The fundraising profession suffers from a gender pay gap," the study concludes. "Fundraisers who are women can still expect to make 10% less than men, even after controlling for education level, years of experience, position level, race/ethnicity, organizational budget, region, family factors, and response year."

The study did state that the gender pay gap in fundraising is not as great as the 16% nationwide gap for all professions.

The study found that the median salary for female fundraisers in 2018 was $67,000, while the median for males was $79,650. The gap has fluctuated up and down since 2014, when the median for women was $65,000 and the median for men was $82,000. The salary disparities from 2014 to 2018 are all more than 10.5%, with the other variables besides gender making up the difference.
