Age and Wealth Are Predictors for Annual Gifts as Well as Planned Gifts

Two key predictors of making a planned gift - age and wealth - are also key predictors of recent annual giving, according to a new study.

"Charitable Giving in the U.S.A. 2019," released in March by the Charities Aid Foundation, found that those 55 and older and those making $80,000 or more per year were the most likely to give to charity during the 12-month survey period that ended in August 2018.

In the age category, 68% of those 55 and older gave to charity in the previous 12 months - above all other age groupings. In the wealth category, 74% of those in the highest income category made charitable gifts in the previous year - significantly greater than lower income levels.

The study did not look at planned giving at all, but other research has found that age and wealth are two of the most important predictors of making planned gifts.

The Charities Aid Foundation found that giving was up significantly overall since the foundation's last report that was published in 2017; 62% of Americans gave to charity in the latest report, up from 55% two years earlier.
